The right skincare routine can transform the way you look and feel. Whether your skin is naturally dry, oily or a combination of the two, overhauling your skincare regime can banish blemishes and fine lines. If your skin isn’t glowing, take a look at these common skincare mistakes and find out how to put them right...
1. You’re using the wrong products
When choosing skincare products, it’s important to select cleansers, toners and moisturisers that suit your skin type. If you have oily skin, for example, an oil-free moisturiser will keep your skin hydrated without clogging your pores. Conversely, if you have very dry skin, a rich, oily moisturiser might be just what you need to fully rehydrate your skin. By choosing products that are formulated for your skin type, you can personalise your routine and give your skin exactly what it needs.
2. You aren’t using sunscreen
Being exposed to the sun might give you a subtle tan but the sun’s rays can be extremely harmful. In addition to drying out your skin, spending time in the sun can cause premature ageing. Furthermore, failing to protect your skin from the sun can substantially increase your chance of developing skin cancers. To avoid this, be sure to always use sunscreen. Many skincare and make-up products contain SPF, so it’s easy to ensure you’re protecting your skin all year round.
3. You’re ignoring your neck
When you’re overhauling your skincare routine, take some time to think about the products you’re going to use on your neck. Many people ignore this area, which can lead to premature signs of ageing. Even with the benefits of a neck lift, it’s still important to nourish the skin in this area. Using a moisturiser twice a day on your neck can significantly reduce fine lines and prevent sagging. Additionally, firming serums can be a great choice for your neck, as well as your face.
4. You rush your routine
When you’re in a rush to get out the door in the morning or you can’t wait to get into bed at night, it’s tempting to power through your skincare routine in seconds. However, this doesn’t give the products enough time to sink in. Additionally, one product can dilute another, which will reduce their efficacy. If you want to get the most out of your skincare routine, give each product enough time to be fully absorbed by the skin.
5. Over or under-exfoliating
Exfoliating can be a great way to enhance your skin. By removing dead skin cells and debris from the surface of your skin, exfoliating improves your complexion and helps you to achieve a healthy glow. However, over-exfoliating can damage the skin, so you don’t want to exfoliate every day. Most people only need to exfoliate two or three times per week, although less often might be suitable if you have sensitive skin. Of course, if you regularly have glycolic peels or other treatments, you may be able to drop exfoliating from your at-home routine altogether.

We’ve all done it but making a habit of it can have a negative impact on your skin. Forgetting to remove your makeup means that your pores are going to become blocked by the product. In addition, any bacteria that’s already in your pores will be trapped, which increases the risk of breakouts and blemishes. Not only should you remove your makeup every night, but you should ‘double cleanse’ when you’ve been wearing heavy products, like foundation, concealer and highlighter.
7. You try new products all the time
Trying new products can be a fantastic way to find formulas that work for your skin. However, trying a new product every day or trying multiple new products at once can lead to confusion. If you react badly, you won’t necessarily know which product is causing the issue. Conversely, if your skin responds well, you won’t know which product is having a beneficial effect. Furthermore, some skincare products take a few days or weeks to really have an impact. By switching to a new product too often, you might not be giving your current formulas enough time to really enhance your skin.
Finding the Perfect Skincare Routine
Everyone’s skin is different, so finding the right routine for you might take a little time and a bit of trial and error. However, once you find the best products for your skin type and establish a winning regime, you’ll be able to enjoy glowing, youthful skin all year round.
